ITC decides to review Kodak patent suit against Apple, RIM

Posted: 26 Mar 2011 09:47 AM PDT

Yesterday we reported that the U.S. International Trade Commission would decide whether or not it should review the its own judge's decision in favor of Apple and Research In Motion in a case filed against the two smartphone makers by Kodak. The judge had originally decided in favor of RIM and Apple, even though Kodak had won a similar suit regarding the same patents against Samsung and LG in 2009. Last night the ITC decided to review the decision. While that does not mean that it will ignore the judge's previous ruling, it does breath new life into Kodak's case and caused a surge in the company's stock. The patent in question involves use of low resolution image previews as a power and memory saving method with digital cameras.

South Korea shows off "world's fastest" 4G network

Posted: 26 Mar 2011 09:16 AM PDT

Researchers from South Korea's Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute claim that South Korea has created the fastest and most powerful 4G network in the world. The Institute's head researcher claims the nation's 4G network, based on technology called LTE Advanced, runs 40 times faster than the 3G network currently being used. LTE Advanced will let users enjoy high-quality content such as 3D games and HD videos on mobile equipment as they walk. To put it in perspective, today it takes your average South Korean 3G network user over 6 minutes to download a 700MB video file. South Korea's new 4G network can download the same video in 9.3 seconds. LTE Advanced will be able to work with existing 2G and 3G networks, but isn't set to roll out until 2014. When it does, South Korea expects to see an estimated $400 billion in technology royalties.

Apple iPad 2 inventory catching up to U.S. demand

Posted: 26 Mar 2011 07:11 AM PDT

We've just heard confirmation that Apple's iPad 2 inventory has been refreshed, which was our assumption after seeing the adjustment made on Apple's website switching estimated iPad 2 ship times from 4-5 weeks down to 3-4 weeks. BGR has confirmed with various Apple stores and third-party retail locations that new shipments have started to arrive in the past few days. New York retailers seem to be receiving rather small shipments, and so far, it looks much easier to get your hands on a Wi-Fi model than a 3G-enabled iPad 2.

Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY launch delayed by O2

Posted: 26 Mar 2011 05:20 AM PDT

O2 has announced that it is delaying the launch of the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY due to software issues. What the bugs are was not specifically stated, but O2 says that it has been working with Sony Ericsson to fix the issues. Unfortunately, the PLAY will not likely be ready in time for the expected April 1 launch. These types of software issues could very well be the reason why the Verizon Wireless version of the PLAY will not have the custom Sony Ericsson interface, instead opting for a standard Android 2.3 Gingerbread look and feel.
