Consumers Union, the nonprofit publisher of Consumer Reports, today released a statement imploring federal regulators to look very closely at the potential harm that may be caused to both consumers and competition in the wake AT&T's purchase of T-Mobile. The statement indicated that consumers already feel taken advantage of in the wireless marketplace. "From a consumer's perspective, it's difficult to come up with any justification or benefits from letting AT&T swallow up one of its few major competitors," writes Parul P. Desai, policy counsel for Consumers Union. Consumers Union closed the statement by announcing its dedication to scrutinizing this deal, alongside regulators and lawmakers, to investigate what this deal may mean to the consumer's pocketbook.

Nokia may face shortages due to Japan quake

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 12:06 PM PDT

News continues to pour in regarding shipment delays and supply shortages since the devastating March 11 earthquake that struck Japan. Alongside Toshiba and the Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Co., Nokia was not immune to the natural disaster. The world's largest mobile phone maker has announced there may be shortages of some phones due to disruption caused by the quake. Nokia's announcement came on the heels of some good news from Sony, which announced plans to partially resume production at a lithium ion battery plant on Tuesday in Tochigi prefecture. Even with the Tochigi plant, Sony still has six other non-operational sites, which manufacture devices ranging from integrated circuit cards to Blu-ray discs. Around 12 percent of Nokia components are sourced in yen, but after a recent renegotiation of supply contracts, Japanese components are expected to represent a larger share. "Nokia is in a difficult enough position as it is," said Ben wood, head of research at CCS Insight. "The sheer number of phones it sells means it is likely more vulnerable to unexpected disruptions to component supply than rivals." Nokia maintains that, while shortages may occur, the impact on earnings will be limited.
