Apple may struggle to replace iPad's Japanese glass, battery

Posted: 18 Mar 2011 11:59 AM PDT

We've done our best to keep you up-to-date with the situation in Japan, namely whether or not our favorite manufacturers will be able to match supply with demand. Industry research firm IHS iSuppli recently announced that Apple's real problem may lie in finding replacement sources of the battery and glass required for the iPad. Components such as the NAND flash chips (Toshiba), DRAM parts (Elpida), and even the iPad's compass (AKM Semiconductor) are all fairly easy to replace. However, the semi-flexible glass found on the iPad's display may be harder to come by. The folks at iSuppli believe that Asahi Glass, based in Japan, supplies Apple with the rare glass, although Apple has not confirmed that Asahi is its provider. The glass maker has reported damage to its facilities, but this may not be the only obstacle in Apple's path. The iPad's battery cells appear to be made in Apple's Japan subsidiary, which could slow down Apple's iPad operation, as well.

Users report battery issues after iOS 4.3 update

Posted: 18 Mar 2011 10:57 AM PDT

We've seen some reports of issues with battery life from users who have upgraded their Apple devices with the latest update, iOS 4.3. There are reports of battery life issues on all of Apple's iOS products. Decreases in battery life of up to 20 percent have been reported after just 20 minutes of use. Current chatter suggests that the implementation of the new Safari JavaScript engine or increased application multitasking may be the power culprits, though this seems unlikely to us. Others report that the power issue persists even when Safari is closed and apps are inactive.

10.1-inch Android tablet by Toshiba listed by Amazon

Posted: 18 Mar 2011 09:30 AM PDT

Amazon has listed a new 10.1-inch Android tablet made by Toshiba on its site. While there are not many details, it does say that it sports a Tegra 2 dual-core processor from NVIDIA, a 5 megapixel rear camera and 2 megapixel front camera. It's unknown what version of Android it will run, but if we had to guess, we would expect to see 3.0 Honeycomb on it. Looks like this one will be Wi-Fi-only as well, as there is no mention of cellular connectivity with it. This could be the very tablet that we got hands-on with at CES earlier this year. Amazon has not listed a price or release date but you can sign up for more information at its website if you are interested.

Apple confirms Safari outperforms embedded web viewer

Posted: 18 Mar 2011 08:47 AM PDT

Just yesterday, a report out of Blaze Software stated that Google's Android web browser ran 52 percent faster than Apple's mobile Safari. After a day's worth of arguments via Twitter, blogs and media outlets, Apple contended that the report was essentially flawed, and Blaze admitted to testing the phone with their own proprietary app instead of Safari. However, Apple has confirmed that the web viewer embedded with iOS 4.3 does not offer the same performance optimizations as Apple's Safari mobile, which is bundled with Apple's iOS.

AT&T to unauthorized tethering users: cut the cord or pay up

Posted: 18 Mar 2011 08:15 AM PDT

AT&T has issued a letter to customers that it suspects of tethering their devices (read: unlocked iPhone users and rooted Android users) that it will change their data plan to one that includes tethering if they continue to tether their phones. The tethering plan would replace the current data plan that the user is on and change them to a $45 per month plan that includes 4GB of data usage. If the customer is currently on a grandfathered unlimited plan, they will lose the unlimited data access. Customers can stay with their current plan with no changes if they stop using the tethering feature. If they continue to tether, AT&T will change their plan on March 27.
