Canada starts mobile payments era with CIBC, Rogers, and Tim Hortons

The first known mobile credit card transaction in Canada took place today at a Tim Hortons coffee shop in Toronto today, according to CIBC. The Canadian bank reports that Olympic Triathlete Simon Whitfield used a Rogers BlackBerry smartphone to purchase a cup of coffee using its suretap payment system. Tim Hortons is one of many retailers that have upgraded their payment terminals to accept payments from suretap, which uses NFC to wirelessly pay for transactions using a bank account linked to a secure app and a SIM card installed on smartphones. Consumers will be able to begin using suretap beginning in December, but customers can get more information here.

Android captures 75 percent of global smartphone shipments in Q3 2012

Four years after its commercial debut, the Android operating system now accounts for 75 percent of global smartphones, according to IDC. The research firm reports that in the third quarter of 2012, Android is used on three out of every four smartphones shipped to retailers.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich nears 26 percent of Android population, Gingerbread is still king

Google has released its latest report on the current distribution of Android smartphones and tablets that accessed Google Play in the past two weeks. As expected, Android 2.3 Gingerbread remains far and away the most widely-used version of Android, reporting 54.2 percent market share despite nearing the second anniversary of its release date. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich assumed the second spot with 25.8 percent of devices, followed by Android 2.2 Froyo at 12 percent. Android 4.1 Jelly Bean reported only 2.7 percent share, continuing a longstanding trend of the latest version of Android being available to a small portion of users.
