Sprint partners with GetJar, releases over 60,000 free apps Posted: 10 Feb 2010 12:53 PM PST This afternoon Sprint announced a new partnership with GetJar in which it will offer GetJar's library of over 60,000 applications for free. Apps include Facebook, Weather Channel Mobile, YouTube, and more. The app catalog is available for feature phones such as the LG Lotus Elite, Samsung Reclaim, and Sanyo 2700. BlackBerry and Windows Mobile owners will also have access to some apps. A link to GetJar should be available on the Sprint portal on most handsets under the "Downloads" section. T-Mobile USA to offer Swype keyboard on HD2, more devices Posted: 10 Feb 2010 09:23 AM PST T-Mobile USA and Swype today announced that T-Mobile will begin offering more devices with Swype's keyboard technology. The first Swype capable device on the carrier is the myTouch 3G for 2010 phone, and T-Mobile will support it on the HTC HD2 when it launches this Spring. Opera Mini for iPhone to be announced during Mobile World Congress Posted: 10 Feb 2010 06:51 AM PST Norwegian browser developer Opera plans to announce Opera Mini for iPhone during the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona next week, the company said today. The browser would compete with Apple's pre-installed Safari browser on the iPhone, although Opera co-founder Jon von Tezchner told the Associated Press he doesn't think Apple will deny its approval into the App Store, claiming that Apple will "not deny their users a choice when it comes to what browser they use." WiFi handsets in U.S. to quadruple by 2015 Posted: 10 Feb 2010 05:50 AM PST The Coda Research Consultancy says that handsets equipped with WiFi radios will quadruple between 2009 and 2015. With a 25 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR), there will be 149 million WiFi phones in the United States by 2015, the study claims. Also by that time, 66 percent of all mobile handsets shipped will be equipped with WiFi, a majority of them being smart phones. The 802.11n standard will dominate, and the firm expects 95 percent of WiFi phones to use this standard in 2015. Read the full story here. |
