Posted: 25 May 2012 09:28 AM PDT

In a vote cast this week, the Federal Communications Commission has approved the use of 800MHz spectrum for 4G LTE and 3G services. Prior to this, only 2G services were allowed to be used on 800MHz spectrum. This approval means that Sprint should have no trouble converting its 800MHz airwaves, currently used for 2G iDEN services, over to 4G LTE services, as it has planned with its Network Vision upgrades. Sprint announced back in April that it received certification from the 3GPP for the transition of 800MHz to 4G LTE, but it was waiting for approval from the FCC before it could complete the transition. The carrier expects to have 4G LTE services running on its 800MHz spectrum by 2014.
