Key members of webOS Enyo team reportedly leaving HP for Google

According to a report by The Verge, key members of the webOS Enyo team are leaving HP for greener pastures over at Google. Enyo, for the unaware, is the development framework that was introduced with the HP TouchPad tablet and open sourced by HP late last year.

PayPal announces 'check in and pay' mobile payment system

PayPal has announced a new partnership with ERPLY, a point of sale company, that will let consumers check in to stores and then directly pay for goods and services with their PayPal accounts. Once a customers has checked in to a location with the PayPal app, they will not need to open their wallet or pull out their phone to purchase something.

German court rules Motorola violates Microsoft text messaging patent

A court in Germany has determined that Motorola's Android devices violate a Microsoft patent related to text messaging, but not one that is related to localization. The split ruling could result in a ban on the sale Motorola's devices in Germany, and Microsoft is now hopeful that Motorola will sign a patent licensing agreement with it, much like how many other Android device manufacturers already have. "We're pleased the court agreed today that Motorola has infringed Microsoft's intellectual property, and we hope Motorola will be willing to join other Android device makers by taking a license to our patents," said Microsoft deputy general counsel David Howard concerning the decision. It is likely that Motorola will file for an appeal.

Google Play Store gets in-app billing for subscriptions

Google has supported in-app billing in the Google Play Store (née Android Market) for a long time, and today it is expanded the feature to also support in-app subscription billing. Developers will now be able to sell monthly or yearly subscriptions in their apps and have Google do all of the processing legwork for them.

Facebook launches standalone Camera app for iPhone, includes filters, easy uploads

Facebook is expanding its mobile app presence even further today, as it has just announced the new Facebook Camera app for the iPhone. The standalone Facebook Camera app lets users snap photos, add filters, and then upload them directly to their Facebook accounts.

Video: Google+ for Android version 2.6 video walkthrough

Today Google released version 2.6 of the Google+ app for Android smartphones and tablets. The new version brings over the redesigned Stream layout that we first saw on the iOS version of Google+ that was released a few weeks ago, as well as new features like the ability to start Hangouts from a mobile device and edit existing posts while on the go. While the new version of the app is very pretty and aesthetically pleasing, we find that it is not as fast or easy to use as earlier versions, and that's not something we are terribly happy with. You can download Google+ for Android from the Google Play Store now.

Eight of ten smartphones shipped in Q1 ran Android or iOS says IDC

The smartphone platform wars are swiftly becoming a two-horse race, and a new report from research firm International Data Corporation seems to confirm that. IDC says that of all the smartphones shipped in Q1, eighty percent ran either iOS or Android.

Facebook for Windows Phone updated to version 2.5 with threaded messaging, more

Last month,Microsoft teased that a new version of the Facebook app for Windows Phone would be arriving soon, and today it has released the new version in the Windows Phone Marketplace. Version 2.5 of the Facebook app for Windows Phone gains new features like threaded messaging, improved tagging, the ability to delete comments and posts, the ability to like comments, and clickable links in posts. The update is propagating through the Windows Phone Marketplace now and should be available to all users soon.

GameFly apps coming to iOS, Android

GameFly, the video game rental service with a similar business model to Netlfix, has announced plans to launch its own iOS and Android games in the future. Additionally, GameFly will launch the GameFly GameStore app portal for Android devices.

NVIDIA's Icera modem to work with AT&T's flavor of 4G LTE

NVIDIA has announced that its Icera 410 LTE modem chipset for tablets and other devices has been certified to work with AT&T's 4G LTE network. The Icera 410 LTE modem is the first Icera modem to use LTE in NVIDIA's software defined radio baseband processor. It supports 4G LTE category 2 data speeds up to 50Mbps, as well as HSPA+, 3G, and 2G data services. NVIDIA did not say exactly when devices with the Icera 410 LTE modem would be available on the market.

Bump app can now wirelessly transfer photos to a computer

Bump, the popular contact and photo sharing app for iOS and Android, has gained a new feature that allows it to wirelessly share photos with a desktop computer. Using the mobile app's motion-based paradigm, users can "bump" their phone to a computer's space bar to transfer photos to an online gallery from which they can be downloaded to the computer itself.

Assurance Wireless adds text messaging features to entry-level plans

This week Assurance Wireless announced that users of its free and $5 per month wireless plans can now send and receive text messages at no additional cost. The new Free Talk and Text plan adds 250 text messages to the 250 voice minutes already offered to Assurance customers at no charge, while the $5 Talk and Text Plan gains 500 text messages to go with its 500 voice minutes. Assurance customers also have the option to pay $20 per month for 1,000 minutes and 1,000 text messages. Assurance Wireless is provided by Virgin Mobile in 32 states and provides free and low-cost wireless service to eligible low-income customers.

Sony Xperia U, P, sola smartphones make global debut

Sony's latest batch of Xperia smartphones, the Xperia U, the Xperia P, and the Xperia sola are now available for purchase in most of Europe and Asia. The Xperia U and Xperia P were announced at Mobile World Congress earlier this year and are part of Sony's NXT line, while the Xperia sola features a unique "floating touch" display. Prices range from 209 EUR to 392 EUR depending on model and market.

President Obama mandates mobile apps for government agencies

This week, President Obama sent a memo to the heads of every major Federal agency telling them that he wants mobile apps for each department available to U.S. citizens within the next year. Yahoo! outs search-focused Axis browser for iOS devices

Yahoo! has released its own entry into the third-party iOS browser field with the launch of the new Axis browser. Axis, which has the ability to sync with a desktop application on a computer, offers a graphics-heavy visual interface that puts Yahoo!'s search features front and center.
