MasterCard launches PayPass Wallet Services for mobile, online purchases

Hands-on with the Samsung Focus 2 for AT&T

Earlier today, Samsung and AT&T announced the Focus 2, the successor to the earlier Focus Windows Phone smartphones for the carrier. The Focus 2 features support for AT&T's LTE network - a first for a Windows Phone from Samsung - and runs Windows Phone 7.5.

Amtrak conductors to use iPhones for ticket scanning

It appears that Amtrak, the U.S. government owned passenger train system, is about to give up the venerable ticket puncher for a fancy new iPhone scanning system. Starting this summer, conductors will use new iPhones that are equipped with special cases that include an extended battery and scanner to scan customer tickets instead of punching and collecting paper tickets.

Sprint joins Tizen open-source smartphone OS group

Sprint has announced that it has joined the Tizen Association, which oversees the development of the open-source Tizen smartphone platform. Sprint is the first North American carrier to join the group, and it joins NTT DOCOMO, Orange, SK telecom, Telefónica, and Vodafone, which are already members.

Samsung, Qualcomm partner up to form another wireless charging consortium

Samsung and Qualcomm have announced a new partnership to produce wireless charging technology. The goal of the Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP) is to "promote global standardization of a wireless power transfer technology that offers spatial freedom, to develop product testing, certification and regulatory compliance processes, and to foster industry dialogue with regulators on wireless power policy development." Also involved in the group are Ever Win Industries, Gill Industries, Peiker Acustic, Powermat Technologies, and SK Telecom. The partnership plans to release a wireless charging standard that does not use multi-coil repeaters, which other systems rely on.

Twitter refreshes mobile site for featurephones

Twitter has announced a new version of its mobile website for feature phones that brings it more in line with the website available to smartphones. The new site features quick access to a user's timeline, profile, mentions, and connections, as well as trending topics. Twitter claims that the updated site uses one-third less bandwidth than the previous version. Users should see the new site starting today.

Apple updates iPhone, iPad, iPod touch to iOS 5.1.1

Apple has released an update for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch that brings the devices' software up to iOS 5.1.1. The new software fixes bugs concerning switching between 2G and 3G networks on the iPad, improves the HDR function in the camera app, fixes AirPlay video playback bugs, improves reliability of bookmark and reading list syncing in Safari, and fixes a bug when purchasing content from iTunes. The update can be downloaded from the Software Update section of the Settings app now.

Nokia developing fix for Lumia 900's purple screen bug

Nokia has revealed through its official Twitter account that it has a fix in the works for the "purple screen" bug that has been affecting some units of the Lumia 900 smartphone. The bug appears when the screen brightness is set to the low option, which can cause the screen to adopt a purple tint. Nokia says that the bug will be fixed in a future software update, but it did not say when the update would be made available to users.

Evernote to open Chinese data center

It appears that cloud-based note keeper Evernote is planning to expand into the Chinese market in a big way, if the company's CEO is to believed. Evernote CEO Phil Libin has said that his company has plans to open a new data center in China that will improve the user experience of its Chinese users.

HTC One V arriving on a "variety" of U.S. carriers this summer

HTC has announced that the One V, the lowest member of its new One series of smartphones, will arrive in the U.S. in the later part of this summer. HTC did not say which carriers would offer the phone, but it did say that there would be a "variety" of U.S. partners to carry the One V, so we expect that it will be available from more than one carrier when it does arrive. The One V has a 3.7-inch WVGA display, a single-core 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, and a 5 megapixel camera. It runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with Sense 4.0. HTC did not say how much the One V will cost, but we imagine it will occupy the lower end of the price spectrum in the U.S.

Verizon Wireless makes the HTC DROID Incredible 4G LTE official

Though we got a peek at it a few weeks ago when Verizon Wireless inadvertently put it on the DROID DOES website, Verizon has now officially announced the HTC DROID Incredible 4G LTE. The DROID Incredible 4G LTE is the first LTE smartphone in the Incredible line, and it borrows a lot, but not all, of the features of the HTC One S.

Verizon to launch 911 text message services by early next year

Verizon Wireless has announced plans to launch 911 SMS services in a handful of emergency response call centers by early 2013. The 911 SMS service lets mobile phone users send a text message to the call center to report an emergency in lieu of the traditional phone call. Verizon says this service offers an appropriate alternative way to report emergencies for those that are deaf or hard of hearing or are in a situation where it is not safe to place a phone call. The carrier did not say where it plans to offer the service first, or how long it would take before it's available nationwide.

Apple extends free iCloud storage offer to MobileMe users

Apple has extended its 20GB extra iCloud storage incentive for its MobileMe users from June 30 to September 30. MobileMe users, who will see their service shut down at the end of June, are being offered the extra storage in order to get them to move to Apple's iCloud service. After September 30, former MobileMe users will have the option to pay for the extra storage like normal iCloud users or, instead, make use of the free 5GB of storage that Apple provides to all.

HTC releases source code for One X, but not for AT&T users

HTC has released the source code for its new One X flagship smartphone for versions of the device running on many of the world's carriers. But not for AT&T's One X. AT&T, it seems, has forced HTC to block access to the bootloader unlocking tool that is needed before custom versions of the HTC One X software could, theoretically, be installed on the device.
