Posted: 23 May 2012 09:47 AM PDT

AT&T has revealed that it has begun refarming its 2G spectrum in New York City for 3G and 4G uses. This plan was revealed back in March when the carrier started to encourage users with 2G phones to upgrade them to newer devices in order to keep their service. Unveiled during an investor call last week, the new Kai platform is expected to be cheap enough for tablet manufacturers to produce quad-core Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich tablets in the $199 price range. NVIDIA says that the Kai chipset uses some of the "secret sauce" found in the higher-end quad-core Tegra 3 chip, but manages to keep costs much lower. NVIDIA hopes to compete with devices like the Amazon Kindle Fire, but still provide much better performance. There have long been rumors that Google is working on a Nexus-branded tablet that will be quad-core and priced under $200, so Kai may very well be used to power that.
