Google Finance updated for Android and iPhone smartphones

Today Google announced that it has updated its Google Finance for mobile web application. The new mobile website offers nearly all of the functionality of the desktop client. Google Finance provides stock quote search, market overviews, access to your portfolio, and market news. Android and iPhone owners can access the new website by performing a Google search for stock tickers or company names from their smartphones.

RIM buys app storefront developer Cellmania

Research in Motion (RIM) has purchased a mobile application distributor named Cellmania. Cellmania says that it is the leading provider of wireless search, provisioning, and billing solutions for wireless carriers, and its application store infrastructure has been used by clients such as Sprint, Telefonica, Telstra, Orange, Telus, T-Mobile, and more. Its website says that, as a part of RIM, it will continue to bring its expertise in application storefront development to the BlackBerry platform.

Motorola acquires web development firm to focus on Android development

Motorola has purchased 280 North, a firm that created the programming language "Cappuccino," which can be used for creating web applications. Motorola plans to use the technology to "foster the Android ecosystem," with web-based apps.

Samsung Galaxy S is first Android device to be certified with DivX HD rating

DivX, Inc. has announced that the Samsung Galaxy S family of smartphones, available in the U.S., Europe, and Asia, are the first Android devices to be DivX Certified for HD video playback at a 720p resolution. Verizon pushing out Motorola DROID 2 update

Verizon has started pushing a minor upgrade to its new DROID 2 smartphone users. Despite complaints of dropped 3G calls, this update is set to improve text and picture message scrolling, improve set up of the visual voice mail feature, improve contact sync with Corporate Exchange, and provide more accurate contact pictures when reviewing recent call logs. T-Mobile G2 HSPA+ smartphone appears to get FCC approval

A device that appears to be the upcoming T-Mobile G2 by HTC has been approved by the FCC. The G2 is to be T-Mobile's first HSPA+ capable smartphone, and will be powered by Google's Android operating system.

Dell Aero Android smartphone now available on AT&T for $99

Samsung: Galaxy Tab Android tablet launching on September 2nd at IFA

Samsung recently released a teaser video of its upcoming Android tablet, the Galaxy Tab. Little is known about the tablet other than that it will offer a 7-inch screen, video calling, an Android 2.2 Froyo. However, the teaser video also said that the Samsung Tab will make its debut in Germany on September 2nd, which is during the IFA trade show. We'll be in attendance so stay tuned for hands-on and more.

Samsung released a video showing us our first official glimpse at the Galaxy Tab. There are few details at all in the video, but it sure looks nice. It runs the Android 2.2 Froyo OS and features video calling, and is thought to feature a 7-inch touchscreen.

Google Earth 1.1 for Android offers ocean exploration

Google Earth 1.1 for Android (2.1 or later) now lets its users explore the oceans. You just have to download the app, and then zoom in on an area until you're under water. Google Earth 1.1 also offers an "Explore the Ocean" layer which has hundreds of photos and videos who contributed to the layer. Those with Android 2.2 and Flash embedded videos, too. Google Earth 1.1 is available in the Android Market for free.

LG GT540 "Loop" Android smartphone finds home on Rogers

The LG GT540, which was originally announced in January, has landed on Rogers as the LG Loop. The Loop offers a 3 megapixel camera, an outdated Android 1.6 operating system (with a custom user interface), a 3.5mm headphone jack, and chic chrome-colored accents. Rogers is offering the phone with a 2GB microSD card, too. The LG Loop is retailing for $29.99 with a 3-year plan, and can be purchased for $299.99 without a contract.

Former Sprint execs work to bolster Huawei's U.S. presence

Huawei Technologies, a Chinese telecom and wireless parts manufacturer approached Amerilink Telecom Corp. as a consultant in winning more contracts to build-out U.S. wireless carrier networks. Amerilink has seven employees that once worked at Sprint, including its chief officer.

Microsoft: Windows Phone 7 SDK final landing on September 16

Microsoft released its Windows Phone 7 beta SDK in July, and the final version will land on September 16. Over 300,000 developers, big and small, downloaded the beta version of the SDK, according to Microsoft. The final SDK includes Silverlight controls, as well as pivot and Bing maps controls. Microsoft added that the next step is "getting apps and games in front of customers," a step that we're excited for.

Nokia and Intel researching 3D holographic displays on mobile devices

Nokia, Intel, and the University of Oulu announced a new joint research center, part of Intel Labs Europe, that will focus on new user interfaces, including 3-D technology. The group said it would even study the possibility of displaying a 3-D hologram of the person you're talking to.
