Microsoft releases Windows Phone Developer Tools Beta

Microsoft recently released Windows Phone Developer Tools Beta, a near final version of the development kit for creating applications and games for Windows Phone 7 devices. Windows Phone Developer Tools Beta includes Microsoft expression Blend for Windows Phone, the Developer Registration Utility, an XAP Deployment tool, and Silverlight control templates. It also includes the most recent Windows Phone 7 API which includes updates to push notifications, teh accelerometer, and App Bar APIs. Consumer Reports: "We can't recommend the iPhone 4" due to reception issues

On its blog today, Consumer Reports published its thoughts on the Apple iPhone 4 after rigorous testing due to the reception issues that have been widely reported in the press - and largely dismissed by Apple. After testing the device, Consumer Reports said that it "can't recommend the iPhone 4."

Nokia sells MetaCarta Inc, holds on to geographic intelligence tech

Today Nokia announced that it has sold MetaCarta Inc. to Qbase Holdings LLC. Nokia bought MetaCarta, a 30 person firm based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on April 9th, 2010 for an undisclosed sum. Nokia said it will retain MetaCarta's geographic intelligence technology, which it plans to incorporate in its local search and other services. "MetaCarta serves primarily government as well as oil and gas customers," Nokia said. Nokia did not discuss details of the sale.

RIM launches free BlackBerry Protect beta backup software

Research in Motion (RIM) recently launched a new beta application called BlackBerry Protect. BlackBerry Protect lets you remotely backup your bookmarks, browser, calendars, contacts, memos, tasks, and text messages. If your BlackBerry is lost or stolen, you can also remotely lock it. If your phone lost nearby, you can remotely turn on a loud ringtone to help you find it. Finally, you can add a lost and found screen in case the device is picked up by someone willing to return it. Other features include the ability to locate the phone, remote wipe, and device restore.

Sprint 4G WiMAX network now live in 7 new markets

Today Sprint announced that its 4G WiMAX network is now live in seven new markets. The network is now available in Rochester and Syracuse in New York, Merced and Visalia in California, Tri-Cities and Yakima in Washington, and Eugene in Oregon. The new areas bring Sprint's 4G offering up to a total of 43 markets, and the carrier still expects to launch in Los Angeles, New York, and Miami by the end of 2010.

HTC EVO 4G WiMAX smartphone shortage could hurt Sprint's 4G lead

Sprint isn't shipping as many HTC EVO 4G smartphones as it could be, due to a low supply of parts. As such, it could hurt Sprint's initial penetration into the 4G smartphone market. "We thought we would have more of a head start than we'll end up having," Sprint's CEO Dan Hesse told The Wall Street Journal.

Nokia X6 v21 firmware now available

Nokia has issued a firmware update for the x6 smartphone. Firmware version 21.0.004 updates the browser to version 7.2.55.2, adds a 30 day trial of the Shazam music identification software, upgrades the video telephony application, and upgrades Mail for Exchange to version 2.9.210. The firmware update also improves stability and speed.
