Sprint officially unveils the Motorola PHOTON Q 4G LTE smartphone

After teasing its existence in a conference call this morning, Sprint has officially announced the Motorola PHOTON Q 4G LTE smartphone. The PHOTON Q is the first LTE smartphone for Sprint to feature a physical QWERTY keyboard, and it also packs global roaming capabilities.

Google updates Nexus Q, YouTube, Play Movies & TV apps for Android

Google has released updated versions of its Nexus Q, YouTube, and Play Movies & TV apps for the Android platform. The updated Nexus Q app now works with any device running Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread or higher (previously, it was limited to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean devices), while the YouTube app has gained the ability to send content to the Nexus Q device and act as a remote for other devices when it is used with an earlier version of Android. The updated Play Movies & TV app now features faster downloads and includes both performance improvements and bug fixes. All three apps are available for free from the Google Play Store now.

Samsung reported to restore universal search feature to international Galaxy S III

This week, Samsung released an update for the international version of the Galaxy S III smartphone that removed the phone's universal search functionality. The company had already done this on the U.S. versions of the phone, but this move was odd because it was in response to specific litigation by Apple in the U.S. and not internationally. According to TechRadar, Samsung has now said that the update for the international model was released by mistake, and that it will restore the functionality in the near future.

AT&T expands 4G LTE footprint to 51 markets

This morning, AT&T announced further expansion of its 4G LTE network. The carrier now offers 4G LTE service in West Palm Beach, Miami, and Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; as well as in Worcester, Mass. It has also expanded its LTE coverage in Washington D.C.; Baltimore, Md; and in the MetroWest, South Shore, and North Shore areas of Boston, Mass. AT&T now boasts of 4G LTE coverage in 51 markets across the U.S.

Sprint to launch Motorola PHOTON Q QWERTY LTE smartphone "very soon"

During an investor conference call this morning, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse revealed that the carrier plans to launch the Motorola PHOTON Q smartphone in the near future. The PHOTON Q is said to be a 4G LTE smartphone with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and world roaming capabilities. Hesse did not say exactly when the phone would launch, other than that it would be coming "very soon." Pricing information was also not revealed.

Sprint to offer 4G LTE service in Baltimore, three other markets by end of August [updated]

When Sprint launched its 4G LTE network in five markets earlier this month (Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, Kansas City, and San Antonio), we were left wondering about Baltimore, Md., since the carrier had said that it planned to launch the speedier data service there along with the other markets. During the company's investor conference call for its Q2 financial report, Sprint has now revealed that it plans to launch 4G LTE service in Baltimore by the end of August. Sprint did not provide an exact date for when the service would go live and it did not announce any other markets that it plans to launch LTE service in. The carrier said it also plans to launch its 4G LTE service in Gainesville, Ga.; Manhattan/Junction City, Kan.; and Sherman-Denison, Texas by Labor Day.

MetroPCS loses subscribers but increases revenue and profits during Q2 2012

Fifth-place carrier MetroPCS is the latest to report its financial earnings for Q2 2012, and though the carrier lost customers in the quarter, it still managed to improve its financials over the same period last year.
