Apple, Google continue to take market share from RIM, Nokia

ComScore has released a new report on the mobile phone market in the U.S., and it appears to tell the same story we have seen for some time now: Apple's iOS and Google's Android platforms are continuing to take market share away from RIM's BlackBerry and Nokia's Symbian platforms.

Samsung Galaxy S III available at AT&T stores on July 6

AT&T announced today that the long-awaited Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone will be available for purchase in its retail locations and online starting on Friday, July 6. Customers have been able to place pre-orders for the device for some time now, and a number of customers have already received their pre-ordered Galaxy S III smartphones. But it wasn't possible to just walk in to an AT&T store and walk out with a Galaxy S III on the same day. MasterCard, Deutsche Telekom launch SIM-based mobile payments in Europe

Telecommunication giant Deutsche Telekom has partnered with MasterCard to launch a new mobile payments service in Europe. The new program uses SIM card-based authentication, which the companies claim makes it more secure for users and provides instant confirmation of transactions through text messages.

Amazon Flow augmented reality shopping app comes to Android

Amazon Flow, the augmented reality and barcode scanning shopping app released for the iPhone last year, is now available for Android devices. The app features the ability to automatically identify objects like books, DVDs, toys, and other consumer goods from either their appearance or their barcode. It then cross-references Amazon's listings with the identified object and pulls up the item's price and associated details from Amazon. The version for Android also adds support for QR code scanning, something that is not yet available for the Flow app on iOS. Flow for Android is free and available in the Google Play Store now.

Android 4.0 ICS arrives for the HTC Incredible S

There is even more Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update news for today. Reports are in from users of the HTC Incredible S that an update to Android 4.0.4 is now available for download over-the-air. The update includes version 3.6 of HTC's Sense interface and weighs in at about 250MB. Unlocked versions of the phone will likely be the first to get the update, then it will roll out to carrier models afterwards. No word on when the update will be available for the DROID Incredible 2 from Verizon Wireless, the Incredible S' CDMA sibling, which is still in a "to be determined" state.

Sony Xperia mini updated to Android 4.0 ICS

Sony has announced the rollout of the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Xperia mini smartphone. The update brings the phone up to what was the latest version of Android until last week and includes Sony's custom user interface. Sony is releasing the update in batches based on serial number, and users will have to plug their phones into a PC or Mac to manually install the update, as it is not available over-the-air.

Firefox HTML5-based mobile OS gains support from ZTE, Sprint, others

Mozilla announced today that its Firefox mobile operating system has gained support from more device manufacturers and carriers across the globe. The HTML5-based platform was first shown off at Mobile World Congress earlier this year and will eventually make it to devices on Sprint's network in the U.S. and other carriers worldwide.

HTC DROID Incredible 4G LTE hits Verizon on July 5 for $149

Verizon Wireless announced today that the HTC DROID Incredible 4G LTE will be available for purchase starting on July 5 for $149.99 with a new two-year contract. The DROID Incredible 4G LTE is the latest in the line of DROID Incredible smartphones, and is the first one to feature support for Verizon's LTE network. It has a 4-inch qHD display and is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. The Incredible 4G LTE runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with HTC's Sense 4.0 interface.

Samsung combines S-LCD, Samsung Mobile Display into Samsung Display

Samsung has announced the formation of its new display manufacturing company, Samsung Display. Samsung Display is the combination of the former S-LCD and Samsung Mobile Display companies. According to Samsung, its new company is the largest manufacturer of displays in the world with 39,000 employees and seven factories across the globe. Samsung Display will produce LCD and OLED displays, both of which are very common in mobile devices.

Apple settles Chinese iPad trademark complaint to the tune of $60 million

The New York Times is reporting that Apple has settled with Chinese company Proview over the company's claim to ownership of the iPad trademark in China. Apple has agreed to pay Proview $60 million as part of the agreement - far less than the $400 million that Proview had allegedly hoped to gain from the settlement.
