Microsoft cuts storage for free SkyDrive accounts to 7GB

Posted: 23 Apr 2012 09:56 AM PDT

Microsoft has scaled back its SkyDrive cloud storage offerings for free users, cutting the free option down to 7GB from the earlier offering of 25GB. Existing users that have accounts with 25GB of storage are able to claim a free upgrade to keep that amount, but any new accounts will be stuck with the new 7GB limitation. SkyDrive users can add 20GB of storage to their account for $10 per year, 50GB for $25 per year, or 100GB for $50 per year. Additionally, Microsoft has released apps for Windows and Mac OS that let users sync files with their SkyDrive accounts. This change comes ahead of Google's expected Google Drive announcement, which is rumored to be a cloud storage competitor akin to SkyDrive or DropBox. Microsoft also announced an update to its SkyDrive app for iOS that adds many of the features that the Windows Phone app recently gained, including batch editing of files.
