HTC shows off potential case options for the One X smartphone

During a meeting with press this week, HTC showed off some potential case designs for the One X smartphone. The cases would give owners that aren't fans of the black or white color options of the phone a way to brighten up their devices while protecting them from damage at the same time.

Time Warner Cable adds live sports streaming to its mobile app

Time Warner Cable customers in New York City, Dallas, and Charlotte that are also fans of live sports broadcasts should be happy, as the cable operator has announced the addition of live streaming sports networks to its mobile app. The TWC TV app for the iPad, iPhone, and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich devices now offers live streaming from ESPN, ESPN2, TNT, TBS, YES( New York City only), SNY (New York City only), MSG (New York City only), MSG+ (New York City only), MLB Network, NBA TV, NHL Network, Fox Sports Southwest (Dallas only), Fox Sports Carolinas (Charlotte only), and SportSouth (Charlotte only). As with the other television programming available in the TWC TV app, users must be connected to a Time Warner Cable broadband service in order to watch the sports networks.

Intel's first smartphone hits Indian shelves on April 23

Intel has been talking up its smartphone platform for what seems like an eternity, but it looks like this is the month that people will be able to actually buy an Intel-powered smartphone, provided that they live in India. This week, Lava announced that its XOLO X900 Intel-powered smartphone will be available for purchase in the country starting on April 23.

Qi extends wireless device charging distance to 40mm

The Wireless Power Consortium has announced that the Qi wireless charging standard now supports charging of devices over distances as great as 40mm. Previously, devices that used the Qi charging standard needed to be within 5mm of the charging pad. The added distance means that Qi-compatible chargers can now send power to 5 watt devices through most tables and counter tops. The Qi standard provides interoperability for wireless charging between various devices and manufacturers. The new specification for the standard includes twelve new designs that give manufacturers more freedom of transmitter placement in their devices.

Nokia loses patent ruling to IPCom in Germany

Nokia has lost a patent battle with IPCom in Germany, with the court finding that Nokia was in violation of IPCom's patents. IPCom successfully won a similar case against Nokia in UK courts last year, but Nokia isn't terribly worried about either case, since it says that the infringing phones are no longer being sold. "We respectfully disagree with this decision, but almost all of these phones predated the grant of the patent in February 2011 and our products today use different methods," said a Nokia spokesperson on the matter. He added that "the judgment does not rule whether Nokia's current mobile devices infringe the patent" and that Nokia would be looking for further clarification from a higher court.

Apple tries to muddy the definition of 4G on the new iPad in Australia

Apple has had quite a battle over the advertised "4G" capabilities of the new iPad in Australia, as the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has accused the company of false advertising, since the new iPad does not support Australia's LTE networks. In response, Apple is arguing that the HSPA+ networks that the iPad does support in Australia offer fast enough speeds that they too can be considered 4G networks.

Sony Xperia S offers great camera and software, but lacking hardware
