Verizon adds 734,000 subs, earns $3.9 billion in profit during Q1 2012

Verizon Wireless released its Q1 2012 financial report this morning, and by all accounts, the carrier should be pleased with the results. Verizon added nearly three-quarters of a million new subscribers during the first quarter, and saw profit growth of 15.7 percent over the same period last year.

HTC One S smartphone hits T-Mobile on April 25 for $199.99

T-Mobile will be the first U.S. carrier to launch an HTC One series smartphone when it releases the One S on April 25. The One S technically plays second fiddle to the One X's orchestra, but it's solid enough to be a top-tier smartphone for most any carrier. Featuring a super thin, 7.95mm aluminum unibody, the One S is powered by a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor clocked at 1.5GHz and paired with 1GB of RAM. It also has a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED qHD display and an 8 megapixel camera with f/2.0 lens and backside illuminated sensor. T-Mobile will offer the One S on April 25 for $199.99, after rebate, with a new two-year contract. AT&T offers cheaper data packages to pre-paid customers

AT&T has announced new pre-paid data packages that offer more data for less money than the carrier's older plans. The new data plans provide pre-paid users with 1GB of data for $25 per month, 200MB of data for $15 per month, or 50MB of data for $5 per month. The new rates offer twice as much data at the same cost as the older plans. Customers will need to have the $50 Unlimited Talk & Text nationwide plan or the $25 Unlimited Text with 250 minutes plan to utilize the new data packages. The new data options will be available starting April 22.

Verizon offers new global data plan for international jetsetters

Verizon Wireless announced a new data plan for international travelers today. The $25 per month Global Data Plan provides 100MB of data usage in 120 countries and locations, including all of Europe, South America, the Caribbean, Mexico and Canada. Customers will need to have a global ready device in order to take advantage of the plan. Should a user go over the initial 100MB allotment, more data will be made available to them at $25 per 100MB. Verizon announces sale of 700MHz spectrum in attempt to curry favor with regulators

Verizon Wireless today offered to put some of its 700MHz spectrum licenses up for sale. The carrier is more than likely using this sale of spectrum as leverage with regulators that have presented opposition to Verizon's planned purchase of AWS spectrum from a handful of cable companies.

HTC One X hits AT&T on May 6 for $199.99, pre-orders start April 22

AT&T has announced that its version of the HTC One X smartphone will be available for purchase on May 6. AT&T's One X features a dual-core, 1.5GHz Qualcomm S4 processor and support for the carrier's 4G LTE network. It has a 4.7-inch, SLCD 2 display with 1280 x 720 pixels of resolution and an 8 megapixel camera with an f/2.0 lens and backside illuminated sensor. The One X runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and has HTC's new Sense 4.0 interface. AT&T will offer the One X for $199.99 with a new two-year contract when it is available for purchase. Anxious buyers can place pre-orders for the One X starting on April 22 at www.att.com/onex. Buyers will be able to choose between white or grey versions of the smartphone. Acer promises Android 4.0 ICS updates for Iconia Tab A500, A100 to arrive April 27

Acer has officially gone on record to say that the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich updates for the Iconia Tab A500 and A100 tablets will arrive on April 27 in the U.S. Those in Canada will see the A500 update on that same day, while the A100 update is due to arrive in Canada on May 3. Interestingly enough, Acer hasn't announced plans to upgrade the A501 variant to Android 4.0, with the only difference between it and the A500 being 3G connectivity.

Video: Sony Xperia S 1080p HD video sample

This is a sample 1080p HD video show with the Android-powered Sony Xperia S and its 12.1 megapixel camera. The camera has proven itself to be a great tool for shooting still photos, but comes up short when recording video. The focus system lags horribly at times when recording, and the audio is a bit soft and difficult to hear, though pretty clear.

Huawei Ascend P1 smartphone hits global markets next month

Huawei's Ascend P1, the super-thin Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone unveiled at CES earlier this year, is due to arrive in various global markets starting next month. Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Australia will see the Ascend P1 first, and then it will land in Latin America in June and Europe in the summer. Huawei doesn't yet have plans for a North American launch. As a refresher, the 7.69mm thick Ascend P1 features a dual-core, 1.5GHz TI OMAP processor, a 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED display, and an 8 megapixel camera.

HTC One X gets software update, supposed battery life fixes in tow

The HTC One X has been on European shelves for only a very short while, but it is already getting its first software update. The 30MB update is arriving for unlocked and unbranded handsets, and supposedly addresses a number of bugs, including the poor battery life that some users have reported. The update does not upgrade the One X to Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, but instead keeps it on Android 4.0.3. Owners of unlocked One X smartphones can head to the Software Updates section of the Settings app to check for the update now, while those that purchased their phones through a carrier will have to wait for it to be pushed down to them.
