Instagram for Android already updated to fix camera crashes

One of the most anticipated apps to hit Android devices, Instagram, has already received an update just hours after its initial release. The update offers a fix for camera related crashes that users have reported. Unfortunately, it doesn't address the problems we have seen with the HTC One X, though it does now say that its camera is unsupported rather than just failing. It looks like Instagram still has some work to do.

Android nabs 50 percent U.S. market share in comScore's latest report

Research firm comScore has released its latest MobiLens report looking at the U.S. mobile phone market from December 2011 to February 2012. Android was the big winner this quarter, gaining enough market share to claim half of all smartphones in the U.S.

RIM hit with lawsuit over patent infringement

Following its dismal quarterly report from last week, it seems like RIM just can't catch a break. The beleaguered smartphone manufacturer has now been hit with a lawsuit by NXP for allegedly infringing upon six of NXP's patents with RIM's smartphones. NXP, a Dutch company, wants compensatory and triple damages, and wants RIM to be forced to stop the alleged infringement.

Pre-orders for LG Viper 4G with LTE on Sprint start April 12

Sprint's getting that much closer to actually launching an LTE device today, as the carrier has announced a coming pre-order date for the LG Viper 4G LTE smartphone. Sprint is offering the Viper 4G for $99.99 with a new two-year contract, and customers will be able to place a pre-order for one starting on April 12. The carrier still isn't saying when the phone will actually hit shelves, but it claims that more information on availability will be coming at a later date. The Viper 4G features recycled materials, a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and support for Google Wallet.

Google adds London Underground service alerts to Google Maps

Google Maps for Android users in the UK can now benefit from service alerts for the London Underground right on their handsets. Google has added service alerts as well as planned weekend maintenance to its Google Maps Transit database, so travelers can easily plan around anything that comes up. Google Maps can also provide alternate directions if a particular station is out of service. Google Maps for Android is free and available in the Google Play Store now.

AT&T expands LTE footprint in Texas, Indiana on April 8

AT&T has announced that it will offer 4G LTE service in Bryan-College Station, Texas; Bloomington, Indiana; and Muncie, Indiana starting on April 8. AT&T's LTE network offers faster data speeds than its HSPA+ network, though both are confusingly referred to as "4G." The carrier says it will further expand its LTE footprint in Texas and Indiana in the coming months.

MetroPCS adds throttling to LTE plans, raises price of unlimited service

The country's fifth-largest carrier and one of the few with an active LTE network, MetroPCS, has revealed that it is adding data speed throttling to three of its 4G LTE plans. The new throttling will kick in after 250MB, 2.5GB, or 5GB of usage depending on the plan, and will limit users to 3G-like speeds, though the actual throttled speed was not specifically defined. This practice is similar to the data speed throttling that T-Mobile adopted a while back. Additionally, MetroPCS is raising the price of its plan with unlimited 4G LTE data from $60 per month to $70 per month. The unlimited plan is exempt from any speed throttling.

Path updates iOS, Android apps with tighter security features

Path, the social networking app that was at the center of a user privacy firestorm not too long ago, has released updates for both the iOS and Android versions of its app that include greater security for user data. Version 3.1.1 of the apps now hashes user contact data before it is transmitted to Path's servers. This anonymizes the data so that if it is intercepted, it can't be easily decoded. The anonymized data includes last names, phone numbers, email addresses, Twitter handles, and Facebook IDs. Path says that it collects this data to connect users with others that they know that are using the service. Google, Oracle unable to work out differences; case headed to trial

The patent lawsuit between Google and Oracle will be headed to trial on April 16, as the two IT behemoths were unable to reach a settlement agreement beforehand. Oracle has sued Google over alleged misuse of Oracle's Java patents in the Android operating system. Google offered a settlement to Oracle last week, but it was rejected on the grounds that it was not large enough to compensate for Oracle's alleged damages.

RIM launches Mobile Fusion device management service for enterprise

RIM has announced the availability of its Mobile Fusion device management platform for businesses. Mobile Fusion allows business IT departments to manage BlackBerry OS, Android, and iOS devices from one central location. IT managers can use the software to define policies and secure devices used by a company's workforce. The ability to remotely lock and wipe lost devices is available, as well as a number of other administrative tools. Interested businesses can contact RIM to purchase licenses for Mobile Fusion now.

Android 4.0 ICS now on 2.9 percent of Android devices, 2.3 Gingerbread still dominant

The latest figures from Google's Android platform distribution statistics show that Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is now used on 2.9 percent of the Android devices in the world. Android 4.0 was launched back in October of last year, but until recently, it was only available for a handful of smartphones and tablets and accounted for a mere 1 percent of all Android devices in use. HTC and Samsung have begun delivering official Android 4.0 updates to a number of their handsets, which seems to be the reason for the uptick in adoption rates. Android 2.3 Gingerbread is still the dominant version in use today, with 63.7 percent of Android devices in use running it.

Japan Display to compete with Samsung in OLED display market

It looks like Samsung will finally have some competition in the OLED display production arena, as Japan Display, a joint venture between Sony's, Hitachi's, and Toshiba's display divisions, has announced intents to mass produce ~OLED panels. Japan Display says that it will have samples for manufacturers by March 2013, and its displays will have pixel densities greater than 300ppi and be more efficient than Samsung's current OLED panels. OLED displays are very common in small devices like smartphones, and are usually seen with branding such as {Super AMOLED} and ClearBlack AMOLED. Thus far, Samsung has been the dominant manufacturer of OLED displays.

Motorola to be investigated by EU over misuse of patents

The European Commission has revealed that it plans to launch an investigation into Motorola over its alleged unfair licensing terms for its fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) patents. The investigation is in response to complaints over Motorola's licensing activities from both Apple and Microsoft.
