Samsung still top phone maker, Android still top smartphone OS says comScore

Research firm comScore has released its latest report on the mobile industry in the U.S., and not much has changed since the last report. As we saw with the report covering August through October, the new report for September through November shows Samsung holding on to its lead as the top mobile phone manufacturer, and Android maintaining its first place spot in the smartphone OS battle.

The mophie juice pack plus outdoor EDITION is essentially the same battery pack/protective case for the Apple iPhone 4/4S as the juice pack plus that was released last year, but it comes in a new color scheme and includes access to mophie's new Outdoor wayfinding app for the iPhone. The case sports a 2,000mAh internal battery that doubles the life of the iPhone 4 or 4S, and is painted in a military green color with orange trim. The Outdoor app features GPS tracking and downloadable maps, as well as the ability to record hikes and mark waypoints. The mophie juice pack plus outdoor EDITION is available now for the iPhone 4 and 4S for $119.99.

UNIEA Design Series cases for Apple iPhone 4/4S review

UNIEA, a manufacturer of cases for smartphones and tablets, has released a new line of cases for the Apple iPhone 4 and 4S that feature slim profiles and custom art designs. Called the "Design Series," the cases are made from polycarbonate and sport anti-scratch UV coatings. Nokia, Samsung, HTC rumored to announce LTE Windows Phone smartphones at CES

The one thing that is notoriously missing (well, one of the things) from any Windows Phone smartphone on the market is true 4G network support. Specifically, we talking about support for LTE networks. Microsoft and its partners have promised that will change in 2012, and if today's rumors have any weight, we could see LTE-equipped Windows Phone smartphones from HTC, Samsung, and Nokia at the CES trade show in early January.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 with LTE for Verizon finally gets a taste of TouchWiz

The Wi-Fi version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 has had Samsung's TouchWiz interface since August, but the LTE version of the tablet offered by Verizon Wireless is just now getting the custom interface and associated mini-apps. In addition to Samsung's special treatment of Android 3.2 Honeycomb, the update brings DiVX video support, Bluetooth 3.0, and Samsung's own AllShare DLNA media sharing. The update is listed as coming soon and should be hitting users' tablets in the near future. Samsung says that the much more interesting upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will arrive for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 after Q1 of next year. Hopefully the LTE version of the tablet won't be too far behind in getting that upgrade.

Verizon to ding bill-payers an extra $2 starting January 15

Verizon Wireless has announced that it will institute a $2 surcharge for any customer that chooses to make a single payment on their bill, whether that be online or by telephone. The carrier is waiving the fee for those that pay by electronic check or enroll in AutoPay, Verizon's recurring payment system. Verizon says that it is instituting this fee to allow it "to continue to support these single bill payment options in these channels and is designed to address costs incurred by us for only those customers who choose to make single bill payments in alternate payment channels (online, mobile, telephone)." The new fee will take effect on January 15, 2012.

Amazon moves over 4 million Kindles in December

Amazon has announced that December was quite a month for the e-tailer, as it was able to sell more than 1 million Kindle devices per week for the entire month leading up to the Christmas holiday. The company notes that this year was the best holiday season ever for the Kindle family, but it does not say how many of each particular Kindle model were sold. If we were the betting type, we would say that the Kindle Fire certainly played a part in Amazon's successes this year, as Amazon claims that it is the "#1 best-selling, most gifted, and most wished for product across the millions of items available on Amazon.com since its introduction 13 weeks ago."

HTC offers bootloader unlock tool for all smartphones released after September 2011

HTC has announced that the tool that it provides to unlock the bootloaders of its Android smartphones has been updated to work with all models released after September 2011. This means that owners of the HTC Vivid, Rezound, and other recent models can now unlock their bootloaders and load custom software on the devices. As with previous versions of the unlock tool, use of it will void a phone's warranty, and users need to have the Android SDK installed on their computer for it to work. The company says that it is still working to provide unlock options for other models released prior to September 2011.

Samsung ships 1 million Galaxy Note smartphones without the help of the U.S.

Samsung announced earlier today that it has shipped one million of its Galaxy Note smartphone/tablet hybrid devices in the roughly two months since the device became available for purchase.
