Next gen iPhone could sport NFC app for remote computing

An anonymous source speaking to CultofMac claims that the next generation iPhone could offer near-field communications support for remote computing. The technology could potentially allow you to carry all of your Mac settings with you on your phone, and apply them to an NFC-capable Mac on-the-go.

Apple iPhone 4 remains top smartphone, Android is most popular operating system

A new report from NPD Group says that Android's U.S. market share has increased 11 percentage points from the second quarter of 2010. It was installed on 44 percent of all smartphones purchased in the U.S. during the third quarter of 2010. Despite those figures, the iPhone 4 remains the most popular smartphone.

According to a new report from Canalys, which focused on the U.S. and global smartphone markets during Q3 2010, Apple shipped the largest number of units (aside from a grouped set of Android devices) during Q3. The report also found a large global growth of Android smartphone shipments.

T-Mobile intros tethering and Wi-Fi sharing plan for smartphones

Today T-Mobile officially announced a new tethering plan that will allow smartphone owners to use their devices as wireless 3G modems. T-Mobile customers can now add a $15 tethering plan to their existing unlimited $30 monthly data plans. Wi-Fi hotspot sharing will make its debut on the T-Mobile myTouch 4G.

ViewSonic announces ViewPad Android tablets for the U.S.

Today ViewSonic announced two Android tablets that will launch in the United States. The first is the ViewPad 7, an Android 2.2 powered tablet with a 7-inch touchscreen. The second is the ViewPad 10, a 10-inch tablet that will run Android 1.6 and Windows 7 Home Premium. The ViewPad 7 is expected to debut for $479 while the ViewPad 10 will cost $629.

ZTE announces world's first CDMA 1X Advanced voice call

Today ZTE announced that it has placed the first CDMA 1x Advanced voice call. The firm noted a four-fold increase in voice capacity. ZTE's general manager of its CDMA and LTE product line, Li Jian, said that it's easy for operators to deploy the CDMA 1x Advanced technology on their existing networks/ "The existing investment can be protected to the maximum, as only the 1x channel card needs to be replaced," Li said. CDMA 1x Advanced technology should offer increased voice capacity, expanded coverage, and improved voice quality. ZTE said it plans to launch a commercial version during Q1 2011.

Today Sprint announced that its 4G WiMAX network is now available in New York City. It's also available in Hartford and New Haven, Connecticut, New Brunswick and Trenton, New Jersey, and Tampa, Florida. Sprint's 4G WiMAX network is available in a total of 61 markets.

Samsung denies making Nexus Two smartphone

Samsung is not building Google's Nexus Two Android smartphone, according to a Korean website named danawa.com. The site quotes Samsung as saying that rumors to the contrary are "simply not true." The statement comes following a report from Gizmodo last week which claimed that Google is planning to release the Nexus Two and that it will be manufactured by Samsung.

Mount Everest now has its own 3G network

A firm called Ncell has deployed a 3G network on Mount Everest, BBC News is reporting. Mount Everest climbers could be able to place calls from the summit of Mount Everest from the cell tower located 17,000 feet up the mountain, although climbers have not yet tested a call from the peak. Ncell is owned by a Swedish company called TeliaSonera. The 3G tower will also be used for weather reports and information on safety.

Orange UK intros Samsung Galaxy Tab

Today Orange UK announced that it will offer the Samsung Galaxy Tab, a 7-inch Android tablet. The device will offer a customizable Orange homescreen with quick-links to Orange applications including Orange Maps, Your Orange, and a cinema ticket app. The Galaxy Tab will be available for as low as £499 ($800) with qualifying Orange Raccoon and Orange Dolphin data plans.

Accidental snooze: iPhone 4 alarm clock glitch reported in UK

Today some Apple iPhone 4 users in the UK reported a bug that caused their alarm clocks to go off an hour late. The bug apparently resulted from a Daylight Savings switch in the UK over the weekend, according to the Telegraph UK. While the clocks switched to the correct time, the alarm clocks did not automatically adjust themselves for the change. Apple has not commented on the alarm clock bug, but it could potentially happen again in the United States next week when we switch our clocks on the first Sunday of November.

The Galaxy Tab will also launch on O2 today, and T-Mobile has said that it will offer the Tab in the UK as well. India will not ban BlackBerry smartphones, for now

Following the United Arab Emirates, India has told Research In Motion that it will not ban its BlackBerry smartphones, for now. RIM and India reached an agreement whereby the Indian government has "an interim arrangement for lawful interception of BlackBerry messenger services, " according to the AP. A government official told Reuters that "The services will continue to be available," and RIM has agreed to offer a full solution to India by January. Originally India told RIM it would ban BlackBerry devices by Oct 31, and on October 12, it pushed that deadline to January 31.

Apple countersues Motorola for patent infringement

Earlier this month Motorola announced that it was suing Apple for patent infringement, alleging that the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and some Mac computers were infringing on 20 of Motorola's patents. Apple has flipped the tables and is now countersuing Motorola for patent infringement. Apple believes that Motorola's Android phones, including the DROID, DROID 2, DROID X, CLIQ, CLIQ XT, BACKFLIP, DEVOUR, i1, and CHARM, are infringing on six of its patents related to multitouch and operating systems.
