Sony Ericsson Xperia arc S now available from Vodafone UK

Sony Ericsson's updated version of its Xperia arc smartphone, the arc S, is now available for purchase from Vodafone in the UK. The arc S sports a new 1.4GHz processor and 3D sweep panorama mode for its 8 megapixel camera. The 4.2-inch FWVGA (854 x 480 pixel) display and slim dimensions remain the same. Vodafone customers can get the Xperia arc S for free with month plans from 31 GBP per month.

Foursquare brings Lists to its app for Android

Following the update that brought Lists to the iOS version of its app last week, foursquare has now updated its Android app with the new Lists function. The new foursquare for Android allows users to access and manage their lists right from their mobile devices. Additionally, foursquare has added the ability to connect a Twitter account within the app, and you can now sort your friends by Nearby or Worldwide parameters. The updated foursquare for Android app is free and available in the Android Market now.

Banks try to convince Congress that they need to robocall our cellphones

A new bill has been introduced in Congress that would make it legal for companies to use autodialers, aka robocall, when calling a customer's cellphone. It has been illegal for telemarketers to call people on their cellphones with automatic dialing systems since 1991. The new bill looks to reverse that, in the name of "informational purposes."

HTC Sensation headed to China Mobile with new processor

According to a slide from China Unicom showing the history of the iPhone in China, the next iPhone, the so-called iPhone 5, will support HSPA+ data connections. Currently, the iPhone 4 tops out at 7.2Mbps HSPA.

New NFC spec to simplify data transfer between phones

The NFC Forum has ratified a new specification for NFC communication that will make it easier to transfer data, such as contact info, between phones. The Simple NDEF Exchange Protocol (SNEP) is the 16th specification for NFC, and will make peer-to-peer data transfers easier.

T-Mobile has announced plans to redesign almost 400 of its corporate-owned retail stores across the country with a new, fresh look. The company says that the new design is based on the European stores owned by its parent company Deutsche Telekom, but astute shoppers will recognize a certain Cupertino company's influence on the new look.

Best Buy lops $200 off price of BlackBerry PlayBook

Best Buy has drastically cut the price of the BlackBerry PlayBook in likely response to Amazon's tablet announcement yesterday. The retailer has cut $200 off of each model, bringing the 16GB version down to $299, while the 32GB and 64GB models are $399 and $499 respectively. Retailers in Canada have cut prices on the poor-selling tablet already, and some other American retailers have done the same. Amazon's Kindle Fire tablet will be available in November for $199, severely undercutting other tablets on the market.

Nokia to replace Series 40 with new Linux-based OS

According to the Wall Street Journal and BGR, Nokia is planning to abandon the Series 40 featurephone operating system in its low-end phones and replace it with a new Linux-based OS called Meltemi. The new operating system is expected to be fairly capable, but will not be on the same competitive level as Windows Phone 7.5, iOS, or Android.

Sprint to discontinue 1-year contract options on October 2

Sprint has confirmed in an email to MobileBurn that it will no longer offer a 1-year contract renewal option to customers as of October 2. Prior to this, customers had the option to renew their contract for a 1-year term and receive a $75 discount on a new device. The only options available after October 2 will be to pay full retail price for a new device or sign a 2-year contract and get a subsidized price on the new phone. Sprint points out that the 2-year contract option is the most popular among its customers. Verizon Wireless ended its 1-year contract option back in April of this year.

Nokia and Siemens have announced that Jesper Ovesen has been appointed as Executive Chairman of the Board of Nokia Siemens Networks as of today. Oveson replaces Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, who acted as Non-Executive Chairman. Additionally, the two companies have pledged to invest 500 million EUR (US$675.8 million) each into the joint venture to strengthen its financial position.

Skype for Android updated with more video calling support, in-app ads
