HTC Explorer targets the entry-level smartphone market

HTC has unveiled the new Explorer smartphone, its latest device targeted at entry-level users. Replacing the HTC Smart, the Explorer ditches the BREW platform for Android 2.3 Gingerbread and Sense 3.5, which we saw debut on the HTC Rhyme that was announced last week.

The HTC Rhyme, HTC's smartphone that is targeted towards a female audience whether the manufacturer will admit it or not, is now available for purchase from Verizon Wireless. A penny under $200 and a new two-year contract will get you a warmed over Desire S complete with tangle-free headphones, a wireless docking station, and the glowing charm notification dongle. The Rhyme sports Android 2.3 Gingerbread and HTC's new Sense 3.5 interface, with new widgets and a redesigned app tray. It costs $199.99 with a new two-year agreement.

Video: Amazon Kindle Fire tablet - live video first look

Here's a first look at the new Amazon Kindle Fire tablet from the official launch event in New York. The Fire features a 7-inch 1024x600 pixel IPS display and a dual-core processor and runs a customized version of the Android operating system. The entire user experience has been rebuilt by Amazon, and the tablet features full integration with Amazon Prime streaming services as well as its Kindle books. Even Amazon's EC2 cloud hosting gets in on the Fire's show, as it powers part of the browsing experience in Amazon's new Silk web browser.

Rogers flips 4G LTE switch to on in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver

Rogers has announced that it now offers 4G LTE service in three more Canadian cities. Residents in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver can now enjoy the benefits of LTE on their Rogers devices. To celebrate the launch, Rogers is offering a special 10GB data plan that costs $52.93 CAD per month. It will launch the HTC Jetstream tablet and Samsung Galaxy S II LTE smartphone that can take advantage of the new network later this year. Competitor Bell has offered 4G LTE service in Toronto since earlier this month.

U.S. Cellular to carry HTC Wildfire S smartphone, Flyer tablet

Along with the launch of the HTC Hero S smartphone, U.S. Cellular has announced that it will be carrying the HTC Wildfire S smartphone and HTC Flyer tablet. The Wildfire S will cost $79.99 after rebate with a new two-year agreement, while the Flyer will cost $399.99 after rebate with a two-year contract and a $54.99 per month data plan. Release dates for either device have yet to be announced, but they are expected to arrive in stores next month.

Google seeks to protect confidential Android information in AT&T/T-Mobile merger case

T-Mobile, via its Facebook page, has revealed that it will soon carry the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Android Honeycomb tablet. Details are pretty scarce at this point, as we don't know if the carrier is picking up a 3G version, or if it will just offer the Wi-Fi model. T-Mobile says that more information, such as pricing and release date, will be revealed in the coming weeks.

Samsung to pay Microsoft Android royalties as part of cross-licensing deal

Microsoft and Samsung have just announced a new cross-licensing agreement that will allow each company rights to use the other's patents.
