Sprint 4G WiMAX live in Los Angeles, five other new markets

Today Sprint announced that its 4G WiMAX network is now live in Los Angeles, Miami, Washington, D.C., Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Columbus, Ohio. Sprint's 4G WiMAX network is now available in a total of 68 markets, and Sprint offers two phones that take advantage of 4G data speeds including the Samsung Epic 4G and the HTC EVO 4G.

Best Buy offering free GPS with iPod touch purchase

Best Buy is offering a sale today in which it's offering a free Insignia GPS unit with the purchase of an 8GB, 32GB, or 64GB iPod touch. The sale runs today through Monday and applies to purchases made online only. Best Buy is providing free shipping with the purchase. Insignia is Best Buy's in-house brand for electronics.

Apple buys HP's 98-acre Cupertino campus

Apple has purchased new facilities from HP in Cupertino, California in an effort to expand its facilities, Mercury News is reporting. Apple spokesperson Steve Dowling said that Apple now occupies a total of 57 buildings in Cupertino and that Apple is "bursting at the seams," with employees. The purchase will give Apple an additional 98 acres of land and the existing facilities, once occupied by HP. Apple currently has a 35-acre campus. The price that Apple paid HP was not announced, and Apple, in September, reported that it had 46,600 full-time employees. "Local real estate experts said HP's asking price may have been $300 million or more, but they also said the final amount may have been less because of the sluggish commercial real estate market," Mercury News said. The purchase reportedly makes Apple Cupertino's largest land owner.

Angry Birds Christmas will be free update for iOS devices

Rovio Mobile recently tweeted and confirmed that the special edition Angry Birds Christmas game will be a free update for the iPhone and the iPad for those that already own the special edition Halloween version. Rovio has not yet confirmed if it will release the title on Android. Rovio did not release the Halloween edition for Android devices.

Orange UK outlines Apple iPad pricing, opens registration

Orange in the UK has provided further details on its plans for the iPad from Apple. The iPad WiFi + 3G will be offered for GBP199 for the 16GB model, GBP249 for the 32GB, and GBP349 for the 64GB variant. iPad data tariffs start at GBP25 for existing Orange customers and GBP27 for new. The pricing includes 1GB of anytime data, 1GB of quiet time data (midnight-4pm), and unlimited access to BT Openzones WiFi. For the the full pricing matrix, go here.

Symbian Foundation shutting down website next month

The Symbian Foundation is reportedly shutting down its website next month, on December 17. According to Symbian Developer, that includes the current www.symbian.org"website as well as symbian.org/cn and symbian.org/jp sites, developer.symbian.org, and more. The Symbian platform source code for Symbian^2, Symbian^3, and Symbian^4 will be available by request as a DVD or USB stick. For more information on the changes, visit the developer site now.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 Android 2.1 update now available

Sony Ericsson has announced that the Android 2.1 update for its Xperia X8 Android smartphone is rolling out. The company said X8 users can expect the roll-out to be more of a "gradual nature" and has provided no timeline as to exactly when devices will get the update. Apple blocks Android magazine, radio station apps from App Store

Microsoft warns users jailbreaking could brick WP7 phones

Today Microsoft released a statement related to the recent reports of the ChevronWP7 jailbreaking tool. Microsoft said: "We anticipated that people would attempt to unlock the phones and explore the underlying operating system. We encourage people to use their Windows Phone as supplied by the manufacturer to ensure the best possible user experience. Attempting to unlock a device could void the warranty, disable phone functionality, interrupt access to Windows Phone 7 services or render the phone permanently unusable."
