Samsung's Galaxy Note 4 improves sales in Europe and US

When Samsung revealed its earnings call for the third quarter last week the news was pretty desperate as sales and profits went south. The company's latest flagship effort, the Galaxy Note 4 arrived too late to make a difference in Q3, but it is the device that Samsung hopes will drive recovery through the Holiday Season. However, it got off to a successful but rocky start, although the Korean company now says the Note 4 is going from strength to strength in terms of sales.

HTC launches MediaTek powered Desire 820s

HTC's more aggressive handset strategy continued today with the company launching a new smartphone, although this is mere a variation of one of HTC's other devices. The new Desire 820s is a variation of the recently launched Desire 820, a handset that was launched at IFA back in September. The new version will land aside a growing 820 range that also now includes a Mini version.

Samsung's Galaxy Note 2 is getting a little old now, in fact it has already been replaced by the Galaxy Note 3 and the brand new Galaxy Note 4. However, the Note 2 remains a potent device two years after its release and as it is the device the kicked the phablet trend into gear. Indeed, if you want a phablet then arguably only the Note 3, 4, and iPhone 6 Plus are better, and the Galaxy Note 2 just got more interesting thanks to a new software update.

Xiaomi's Mi4 smartphone is a solid piece of kit, even if from an aesthetic point of view it is a fairly accurate rip off of an iPhone 5s. The newly crowned third biggest smartphone manufacturer in the world is now apparently working on a toned down version of the flagship.

HP MB Chronowing is a high end smartwatch

HP has entered the smartwatch market with a pretty big splash today, raising the curtain on a new wearable designed by Michael Bastian, the Chronowing. Pulling a renowned American fashion designer in for the device probably tells you what HP's goals are. While most smartwatches are trying to marry design over function, HP's effort seems to put the former before that latter.

Sony explains Chinese spying complaint

Sony has had some problems over the weekend as there have been question marks over the security and privacy on some of its Xperia smartphones. A Sony Xperia user found a folder for Chinese internet company Baidu on his device, and he learned that the "myXperia" app was pinging data to servers located in China.

Motorola is maintaining its position as the smartphone company of choice if you want a good Android experience that sticks close to Google's core platform. Interestingly, Motorola was sold to Lenovo last week by the ties to Android will remain strong with the company maintaining a stock Android experience on its devices, while of course Motorola also makes the new Google Nexus 6 flagship.

Nokia to make Android comeback in 2016

Microsoft purchased Nokia's devices and services business earlier in the year and now build the company's old Lumia smartphones. However, Redmond left plenty of Nokia behind and it seems the old Finnish giant is getting itself ready to re-enter the smartphone market. Although, how Nokia goes about this is quite complicated and will depend on the ins and outs of the deal with Microsoft.

Apple Watch for Spring? Maybe Sooner

When Apple launched the Apple Watch back at the start of September, the company announced that the device would not be available until 2015. That is a lot of waiting for a product that was dangled so enticingly in our faces, but Apple Senior Vice President of Retail and Online Stores Angela Ahrendts has now put a more concrete time on when the smartwatch will land. She said in a video message to employees that the device will be arriving in spring next year.
